The Process: an Olfactory Factory

Updated: Dec 30, 2025

At Entropy we aim to make the tale of fragrance an intimate, locally-born story. We don't have lofty ideas of selling to Broadway stars or footballers or platinum-award winning artists. We aim to sell to our neighbour down the street, who is proud to own something sourced locally, to know that the process from inception to packaging didn't occur in some lofty warehouse or lab in a far-off country, but in the kitchens and workshops of their home town. We probably shop in the same supermarket!

Beginning our Journey

You can find out more about Entropy's origins in the about section of this website. The idea is to produce small-batch perfume, test the market and see what resonates with our customers first.

This journey begins in 2026...

Sourcing Ingredients

Thanks largely to the internet, availability and access to ingredients from around the world has arrived in our homes and at our fingertips. This is at once a blessing and a curse, the range can be daunting, and without time and resources to understand and learn the origin and quality of these ingredients, it would be difficult to locate the good stuff and discard the bad.

This process takes a lot of experimentation and trial and error, and a relentless habitual process of sampling - we'll smell anything! We'll put our noses in any old jar, or down any dirty alley. There are many industrially-used scents that, in large quantities, aren't hugely pleasant (there is an olfactive sub-family of animalic scents, often smelling like barnyards or worse...) but that have uplifting qualities when used minutely - an excellent example can be found here. This means we aren't just looking for the next Rose de Mai recreation or a better Jasmine extract, we keep our eyes (and noses) open for all the strange scents you wouldn't always associate with perfumery; the electricity in the air on a stormy day, dry seaweed, milk, damp earth... the list goes on...

However there are still bad versions of good scents; the production process is extremely exact nowadays and the quality of ingredients has far surpassed that of pre-industrial methods (although the processes are fascinating - read about enfleurage here). Therefore the supplier needs to be trusted to provide consistent products over long periods of time, uniformity and reliability are key.

Blending and Formulation

Once we have our ingredients, the next step is blending. This is where the magic happens! The process is long, produces a considerable amount of waste (smelling that bottle you put so much time and so many expensive ingredients in, only for it to turn into a muddy soup, happens more often than a small business owner would wish!) but also provides a few pleasant surprises along the way (consider the process of maceration, where a completed formula is left for weeks, often months, wherein many changes can occur)

We consider the top, middle, and base notes of each fragrance. Top notes are those you smell first, while middle notes form the heart of the fragrance. Base notes provide depth and longevity.

This process can take weeks or even months. We strive for perfection, ensuring that each fragrance is balanced and captivating.

Testing and Refinement

After blending, we move on to testing. This is a crucial step in the process. We want to ensure that our fragrances not only smell good but also perform well on the skin.

We conduct wear tests to see how the fragrance evolves over time. This helps us refine the formula, making adjustments as needed.

Our goal is to create a scent that is not only beautiful but also long-lasting.

The Inspiration Behind Our Fragrances

At Entropy Olfactory, inspiration can come from anywhere. We draw from nature, art, culture, and personal experiences.

Freshness

A key consideration for modern fragrances is maintaining the feeling of freshness, of getting out of the shower and going about your day safe in the knowledge that no matter what happens, you remain vigorous and spritely. At Entropy Olfactory we hope to provide new ways of maintaining this feeling through our products. Whether through the lightness of cucumber, the cleanness of bergamot, or the exotic citrus of yuzu, we hope to present new ways to help you move through your day with energy and ease

Personal Experiences

Personal experiences are another key source of inspiration. We hope to take you back to that place in your memory you didn't even realise you'd lost; grandma's hands playing the piano, the dew drops landing on the pond in your childhood garden, the sound of the waves lapping the beach on your first holiday together...

Our plan for the second release includes Jedda, a fragrance heavily influenced by our experience of the labyrinthine souks of Marrakech; huge sacks of spices in a profusion of deep, rich colours, herbs drying from racks hanging above, rose gardens and ornamental fountains, sweet mint tea in small handle-less cups, the bubbling pools of leather treatment works , a million bodies in narrow spaces under a desert sun, the gentle patter of feet wafting incense across the gleaming tiles of a mosque... a thousand smells packed and compressed by an unforgiving heat into an experience like no other

The Impact of Fragrance

Fragrance has a profound impact on our lives. It can influence our mood, boost our confidence, and even enhance our memories.

Mood Enhancement

Certain scents can uplift our spirits. For example, citrus scents like grapefruit and bergamot are known for their energising properties. They can help improve focus and motivation, helping us keep going after long days at work or during stressful situations.

On the other hand, calming scents like lavender and chamomile can promote relaxation and reduce stress, cedarwood is grounding, vetiver warm and comforting, patchouli evocative and sensual.

Start to combine these ingredients and the narratives we tell are almost endless!

Memory Association

Fragrance is closely linked to memory. A particular scent can transport us back to a specific moment in time and many people associate certain fragrances with special memories, such as a loved one or a significant event.

At Entropy Olfactory, we aim to create fragrances that evoke positive memories and emotions. We want our scents to be a part of your story.

The Future of Entropy Olfactory

As we look to the future, we remain committed to our mission of creating unique and meaningful fragrances. We are constantly exploring new ingredients and techniques to enhance our offerings.
